The 82nd Annual Academy Awards

Filed under: Fashion, Movies, Reviews on March 8, 2010 @ 6:49 pm

Every year, the Academy Awards remind me that I missed out on a bunch of movies. In 2009, the only Oscar-nominated movies I saw were Inglourious Basterds, Up, and Coraline, so I don’t feel very qualified to comment on the winners. And my Netflix queue has grown considerably in number since last night.

I’ll just say a few things. First, I was glad that Christoph Waltz won Best Supporting Actor, since I thought his portrayal of Hans Landa was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. Second, I’ve been a huge fan of both Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock for years, so I was very happy to see them win as well, and Sandra Bullock’s speech almost made me cry. And lastly, it was nice to see a woman win the Best Director award for the first time in history.

As far as the ceremony itself goes, I was a little disappointed. I felt like Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin weren’t nearly as funny and entertaining as they could have been. After Neil Patrick Harris’ opening act, I thought I was in for a great night, but the rest of the ceremony just kind of fell flat.

And then there were the dresses. Now, I usually couldn’t care less about fashion, but one of my favorite parts of the Oscars is seeing all of the gorgeous dresses on the red carpet. I thought almost everyone looked beautiful and there were so many good dresses to choose from this year, but here are my top five:

1. Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab – I knew when I saw it that no other dress would top this one in my mind. I love the colors, the softness, and the way it flows. It looks like a painting. It wouldn’t have even mattered what kind of makeup and jewelry Rachel wore because I could not stop staring at her dress.

2. Carey Mulligan in Prada – I really like it when a star can pull off a quirky outfit. I love the cut of this dress, but my favorite part is definitely all of the little charms — including forks and knives — stuck to it. I think Carey Mulligan is the cutest person on the planet right now and this dress suits her perfectly.

3. Anna Kendrick in Elie Saab – She looked like a Greek goddess in this dress. Everything about it — the soft color, the flower on the bust, the long slit lined with lace — is breathtaking. Having the perfect hairstyle to complement it helped too.

4. Sandra Bullock in Marchesa – She looked stunning and completely Oscar-worthy last night. I love the floral pattern of her bodice and the metallic silver paired with pink lipstick. It’s something that I don’t think everyone could pull off, but Sandra definitely did.

5. Kate Winslet in Yves Saint Laurent – I might be a little biased because Kate Winslet is my absolute favorite actress. I think she always looks beautiful and last night was no exception. I really liked the metallic theme that a lot of people seemed to be going with. Kate’s dress was very sleek and simple, and it complemented her body well. The bodice is definitely my favorite part. Paired with her necklace and clutch, I think the whole outfit came together really well and she looked great.

Honorable Mentions: Elizabeth Banks, Helen Mirren, Penelope Cruz

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some serious movie-watching to do!

Spring Break!

Filed under: General, School, Sitely on @ 2:26 am

I just want to quickly say that I’m finished with my midterm exams! After worrying about them for the past two weeks, it feels so nice to be able to say that. I managed to make good grades on them too! I guess frantically studying the night before really pays off. ;)

Not only did I take my midterms last week, but I also turned 22. Thursday was my birthday. My family took me out to eat, presents were given, a cookie cake was devoured, and I felt special. I love my family.

This week, I can finally relax. It’s my Spring Break! No homework or quizzes or tests to worry about. To make things even better, Adam is taking a vacation from work, so I’ll get to spend my break with him. We didn’t plan it that way; it just happened. He’s going to take me out to eat and to see Alice in Wonderland as a belated birthday present sometime this week, so I’ll have a movie review to do soon.

There is so much I’ve wanted to update about, but I haven’t had time to with midterms looming just around the corner. Now that they’re over, maybe I can finally stop neglecting this blog so much. I definitely still want to write about the Olympics, and after watching the Oscars tonight I’m itching to do a post about them as well.

This layout is in need of a change too. I’m getting sick of winter and snow, so being bombarded with snowflakes every time I visit my site is not exactly making me happy.

It’s late and my bed beckons, but I’ll be back soon!

Love Every Day & Have Fun on Feb. 14th

Filed under: Holidays, Love, Television on February 16, 2010 @ 2:51 am

School has kept me so busy this semester that I haven’t had much time to blog. The little time I have on the computer that’s not devoted to school is divided between quickly checking the websites I regularly visit and posting something in soundbite form on Twitter or Tumblr. I’ve also been going to hockey games with Adam on the weekends. Our local team, the Knoxville Ice Bears, is doing good this season. At any rate, this is the first chance I’ve had in a while to just sit down and write, so that’s what I’ll do. :)

First of all, happy belated Valentine’s Day! I hope you had a good one, regardless of whether or not you have a significant other. I think too much emphasis is placed on romance on Valentine’s Day. Not all love is romantic. I could go on and complain about how overly commercialized Valentine’s Day is or about how love is always significant, not just on February 14th, but I won’t. Because I learned a long time ago not to take this holiday too seriously. It’s an excuse to have fun and celebrate, which is fine with me.

Adam and I haven’t done the chocolates and roses thing in years and, honestly, I’m glad because I like our way better than Hallmark’s. We cooked a yummy dinner of pork chops, homemade macaroni and cheese (my mom’s recipe), and asparagus with lemon butter sauce, and we watched 500 Days of Summer. It wasn’t that different from most of our afternoons together, actually. I did do a little something extra: I baked a red velvet cake. I was going to post pictures of it, but it kind of fell apart because I didn’t let it cool long enough, so it wasn’t exactly picture-worthy. It tasted good, though! 500 Days of Summer was better than I thought it would be. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending and, overall, I thought it was a cute movie.

I also made sure to call my mom and dad and wish them a happy Valentine’s Day. :)

Vancouver 2010

Is anyone else watching the Olympics? I don’t know what it is about them, but every year they’re on I watch them obsessively, especially the winter Olympics. I used to play soccer and run track, so you’d think I’d be more interested in the summer games, but winter sports are my favorites. I’ve been watching the Vancouver 2010 Olympics since the opening ceremony on Saturday night. I guess I just really like seeing the entire world come together and compete in good spirits. It’s the largest-scale competition — the best of the best athletes in the world, all concentrated in one place. Olympic athletes are heroes in their own right, which makes their triumphs all the more exciting and their defeats all the more heartbreaking.

They’re also just really, really fun to watch. And you only get to see them once every four years. :)

My favorite events are snowboarding, skiing, figure skating, speed skating, and hockey, but I enjoy watching everything. How about you? If you’re watching, what events do you like best?

Ada Lovelace Day

Filed under: Feminism, Technology on January 28, 2010 @ 9:19 pm

Just a quick post to let you know that I will be participating in Ada Lovelace Day on March 24th. I will be writing a blog post about a woman in technology or science who I admire, adding my voice to thousands to celebrate the achievements of women in those fields. If you would like to do the same, go to Finding Ada and add your pledge!

As a feminist, a gamer, and someone who is planning on entering the field of Information Technology, the role of women in technology is important to me. I hope to help bring attention to the accomplishments of women in tech and to let the world know that women are just as capable as men in any field.

If you’re wondering who Ada Lovelace was, her Wikipedia page can tell you better than I could. In simple terms, she was the first computer programmer, female or male. She wrote programs for Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, a prototype of a computer that was never built.

I have a few ideas of who I’ll write about since there are several women in tech I look up to, but I haven’t settled on anyone yet. This is the first time I’ve participated in anything like this, being a newbie blogger, and I couldn’t be more excited!

I guess I should note that I identify as a feminist, and gender issues are important to me, so it’s inevitable that I will mention things in relation to gender issues on this blog every now and then. This is a personal blog, so I’ll write about things that are important to me. However, I don’t plan to discuss gender issues on a regular basis, especially when there are plenty of people who can do a far better job of that than I could.

Still Around

Filed under: Interwebs, Lists on January 22, 2010 @ 4:49 pm

I will be back to blogging and commenting shortly. Life is busy! I just started a new semester at school and I’m taking more classes than I should be. Lately I’ve been running around like a crazy person, trying to get my textbooks and supplies and figure out my classes and get all of my assignments done at the same time. But I think once I get settled into a routine I’ll be able to blog regularly again.

To make this post less empty, I’ll share some links to some of the various things on the interwebs that I’ve been enjoying lately:

The Book Seer – A quick and easy tool for book recommendations.

Star Wars Weather Forecast – Much more interesting than “slightly cloudy with a chance of rain.”

Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer’s engagement photo – Two of my favorite people…getting married!

Google Image Search for ‘angora rabbit’ – I want my very own fluffy ball of fur!

The Boston Globe’s “The Big Picture” Column – News stories in photographs. WARNING: Some pictures, such as those of the earthquake in Haiti, might be hard to look at.

The Guardian’s Books Blog – This has been one of my daily reads for a while, actually.

Atlas Obscura – A collection of strange, curious, obscure, and wonderful things the world has to offer.

This trailer for Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief – I can’t wait!

Edge Online’s Keynotes Section – Great video-game-related blogs.

This trailer for Edge of Twilight – A game I’m looking forward to.

Anything related to Uncharted 2 – I just played this game in the spare time I’ve had since school started, and it was incredible! I wish I was still playing it.
